The history of the Federal District, a federative unit of Brazil, a legal entity under domestic public law, begins with its creation in 1891 by the then Constitution of the United States of Brazil. In 1960, the Federal District was transferred to the center of the country, in a square cut out of the state of Goiás, close to the border with Minas Gerais. Until 1990, the government of the Federal District was appointed by the central government (by the Emperor, until 1889, and later by the President of the Republic). Since 1990, the Governor has been elected by popular vote. The Federal District is among the Brazilian federative species (Union, States, Municipalities and the Federal District).
