The city's economy is quite diversified, although the services sector is largely responsible for tax collection in the municipality. The city also stands out in the production of coconut, it produces the best coconut water in Brazil. The colonization of western Paraíba, the region on the banks of the Peixe River, by settlers from Bahia, Pernambuco and São Paulo, began at the end of the XNUMXth century, after conquering the friendship of the Icós Indians.

The clearing of the hinterlands in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries was gradual, requiring the backlander explorers to make a great effort to dominate less known lands and more distant from the coast.
