On the banks of the Guaporé there are large preservation areas, such as the Corumbiara State Park, with 427 hectares, and the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park, in Bolivia, one of the largest conservation units in the Americas, with 1,6 million hectares. The fauna and flora are among the most diverse on the planet.

The emergence of São Francisco do Guaporé is linked to the history of BR 429, which connects the great north-south axis, BR 364 (São Paulo - Cuiabá - Porto Velho - Manaus, to the Guaporé valley, in the city of Costa Marques). The political settlement enabled a population growth in the short space of 10 years and as a result, the beginning of the emancipation process culminated in the will and effort of its inhabitants, allied with the constituted political power. Thus, the Vila leaves its condition as a District and becomes the Municipality of São Francisco do Guaporé on December 27, 1995, through State Law nº.644, sanctioned by the then Governor of the State of Rondônia Valdir Raupp de Matos, and with its areas separated from the municipalities of Costa Marques and Seringueiras.
