Considered as one of the most important natural tourist attractions in Alto Alegre are the Rapids of Paredão, where the attraction consists of a stretch of the Mucajaí River in which a gorge is formed that is very suitable for canoeing.

It was born from the pioneerism of Maranhão's Pedro Costa, from which he searched for arable areas in the interior of the municipality to work and found them in Mata Geral, a place that begins on the left bank of the Mucajaí River. He settled with his companions in the Alto Alegre field (hence the name of the municipality). It was created by Federal Law No. 7.009, of July 1, 1982. The territory of the municipality of Alto Alegre was separated from the municipality of the Capital of the State.
