The first immigrants who arrived in Dois Irmãos, came from Germany with the Cecilia Ship, four years after the Independence of Brazil. They arrived on September 29, 1826, the day of the archangel Saint Michael, which is why they took him as patron.

One of the most important attractions of the city is the Church of São José do Herval. In the heart of the town of São José do Herval, the stone church that opened on March 18, 1923 is one of the main tourist attractions of Morro Reuter. It was built with basalt typical of the region, and its openings are complemented by colorful stained glass in which sunlight highlights images of saints.
